Achieving High Performance Results

Have you ever wondered how Roger Federer, Tiger Woods and Michael Phelps - winner of a record-breaking 8 swimming Gold Medals at the Beijing Olympics - make it looks so easy in their respective sports? Researchers have identified some characteristics common to many high performers in fields as diverse as sport, music, chess, surgery, computer programming, sales and many others. Here are some hints on getting the results.

Elite athletes are legendary for the years of intensive work with their trainers and coaches on their technique, skills, fitness and mental attitude to produce world-beating results. Success never happens overnight. It takes sustained effort and substantial personal investment to strive for the top and stay there.

Michael Jordan, dropped from his tenth grade school basketball team and who became arguably the world’s best ever basketball player, once said, "I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half-hearted results."

Jonny Wilkinson, England Rugby Union goal-kicking star acknowledges practice kicking 1000 balls before major games. He is quoted as saying, “...1,000 kicks to prepare for just 20. That's near enough 50 rehearsals for each single defining event. To me that has been a totally acceptable ratio.”

Research on high performance is becoming clearer: deliberate practice makes perfect, not just practice. Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Michael Phelps are reported to engage in deliberate practice. Consistency and regular use of skills is important, as is expert and uncompromising coaching to accelerate the learning process. Research by the Sales Executive Council indicates that reps receiving good coaching outperform reps receiving poor coaching by as much as 19%. In addition, there is no substitute for hard work.
